كشفت صحيفة نيويورك تايمز، كواليس دراماتيكية وراء إقالة الجنرال راندي جورج، رئيس أركان القوات البرية، على يد وزير الحرب بيت هيجسيث، في خطوة غير مسبوقة تقريباً تأتي وسط استمرار الحرب الأمريكية مع إيران.

ووفقاً لمصادر عسكرية رفيعة مطلعة على التفاصيل، أبلغ هيجسيث الجنرال جورج عبر مكالمة هاتفية في نحو الساعة الرابعة مساءً بتوقيت واشنطن، بضرورة التقاعد الفوري.

وأكد البنتاغون رسمياً أن الجنرال جورج الذي شغل المنصب منذ أغسطس 2023 وكان متبقياً له أكثر من عام حتى خريف 2027 «سيتقاعد من منصبه كرئيس أركان الجيش الحادي والأربعين اعتباراً من الآن» وتولى الجنرال كريستوفر لانيف نائب رئيس الأركان المنصب بالوكالة.

وأرجعت الصحيفة الإقالة إلى خلافات متراكمة بين هيجسيث وقيادة الجيش، خصوصا فيما يتعلق بقائمة ترقيات ضمت 29 ضابطاً، حيث طلب هيجسيث من جورج منع ترقية أربعة ضباط منها: اثنان من أصحاب البشرة السوداء واثنتان من النساء، في حين أن معظم أعضاء القائمة كانوا من الرجال البيض، مما أثار تساؤلات داخل الجيش حول وجود تحيز عرقي أو جنسي في قرارات الوزير.

ورفض الجنرال جورج هذا الطلب، أو على الأقل لم ينفذه بما يرضي هيجسيث، مما أدى إلى تصعيد التوتر، حيث وصفت مصادر عسكرية رفيعة المستوى الإقالة بأنها «الضربة الأحدث» للجيش، وسط شعور بالغضب والإحباط بين كبار الضباط الذين اعتبروها تدخلاً سياسياً مباشراً في شؤون الترقيات العسكرية التي تقليدياً تكون مهنية بحتة.

كما أشارت نيويورك تايمز إلى أن العلاقة بين هيجسيث والأمين العام للجيش دان دريسكول كانت متوترة أيضاً، وأن الإقالة جزء من «شكاوى طويلة الأمد» لدى الوزير تجاه قيادة الجيش.

ويأتي هذا الحدث ضمن سلسلة إقالات واسعة بدأها هيجسيث منذ توليه المنصب في إدارة الرئيس دونالد ترمب الثانية، حيث أقال أو أقصى عشرات الجنرالات والأدميرالات، بما في ذلك إقالة رئيس هيئة الأركان المشتركة الجنرال تشارلز كيو براون أول أمريكي أسود يشغل المنصب في فبراير 2025، وعدد من النساء والضباط الملونين البارزين.

والجنرال راندي جورج، وهو قائد ميداني مخضرم، كان يقود جهود تحديث الجيش الأمريكي، بما في ذلك برامج التكيف مع التهديدات الحديثة، ويُعد إقالته في أثناء الحرب مع إيران أمراً نادراً ومثيراً للجدل، إذ يرى مراقبون أن مثل هذه التغييرات في زمن الحرب قد تؤثر على الاستقرار القيادي والمعنويات.

The New York Times revealed the dramatic behind-the-scenes events leading to the dismissal of General Randy George, Chief of Staff of the Army, by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, in an almost unprecedented move amid the ongoing U.S. war with Iran.

According to high-ranking military sources familiar with the details, Hegseth informed General George via a phone call around 4 PM Washington time of the need for immediate retirement.

The Pentagon officially confirmed that General George, who had held the position since August 2023 and had more than a year remaining until the fall of 2027, “will retire from his position as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army effective immediately,” with General Christopher Lanave, the Deputy Chief of Staff, assuming the role in an acting capacity.

The newspaper attributed the dismissal to accumulated disagreements between Hegseth and the Army leadership, particularly regarding a promotion list that included 29 officers, where Hegseth requested George to block the promotion of four officers from the list: two Black officers and two women, while most of the list’s members were white men, raising questions within the Army about potential racial or gender bias in the Secretary’s decisions.

General George rejected this request, or at least did not implement it to Hegseth’s satisfaction, leading to an escalation of tensions, as high-level military sources described the dismissal as “the latest blow” to the Army, amid feelings of anger and frustration among senior officers who viewed it as a direct political intervention in military promotion matters that are traditionally purely professional.

The New York Times also noted that the relationship between Hegseth and Army Secretary Dan Driscoll was also strained, and that the dismissal was part of “long-standing grievances” the Secretary had against Army leadership.

This event is part of a wide-ranging series of dismissals initiated by Hegseth since taking office in President Donald Trump’s second administration, where he has dismissed or sidelined dozens of generals and admirals, including the dismissal of Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Charles Q. Brown, the first Black American to hold the position, in February 2025, along with several prominent women and officers of color.

General Randy George, a seasoned field commander, was leading efforts to modernize the U.S. Army, including programs to adapt to modern threats, and his dismissal during the war with Iran is seen as rare and controversial, as observers believe such changes in wartime could affect leadership stability and morale.
