لجأت الشرطة في مدينة سيدني الأسترالية إلى «رذاذ الفلفل»، ودخلت في صدامات مع متظاهرين خلال مسيرة احتجاج على زيارة الرئيس الإسرائيلي إسحاق هرتسوغ.

ورشّت الشرطة المتظاهرين ومراسلين صحفيين برذاذ الفلفل، خلال محاولة المسيرة المؤيدة للفلسطينيين الخروج من المنطقة المحدَّدة للتظاهر بها.

واحتج الآلاف في أنحاء أستراليا، اليوم (الإثنين)، على زيارة هرتسوغ إلى عدة مدن بهدف التعبير عن تضامنه مع اليهود في أستراليا بعد حادثة إطلاق نار جماعي وقع العام الماضي.

وزار هرتسوغ أستراليا هذا الأسبوع تلبية لدعوة من رئيس الوزراء الأسترالي أنتوني ألبانيزي في أعقاب حادثة إطلاق نار وقعت في 14 ديسمبر على شاطئ بونداي وأسفرت عن مقتل 15 شخصاً.

وفجرت الزيارة غضب بعض الأستراليين الذين يتهمون هرتسوغ بالتواطؤ في مقتل مدنيين في غزة. ونظمت جماعات مناصرة للفلسطينيين احتجاجات في مدن وبلدات في أنحاء البلاد، اليوم (الإثنين).

وفي سيدني، تجمع الآلاف في ساحة بحي الأعمال المركزي بالمدينة، واستمعوا إلى خطب ورددوا شعارات مؤيدة للفلسطينيين.

وقال متظاهر: «كانت مذبحة بونداي مروعة، لكن قيادتنا الأسترالية لا تعترف بالشعب الفلسطيني وسكان غزة». واتهم هرتسوغ بالتهرب من جميع الأسئلة المتعلقة بالاحتلال، وقال إن هذه الزيارة تتعلق بالعلاقات بين أستراليا وإسرائيل، لكنه متواطئ.

من جانبه، نشر المجلس اليهودي الأسترالي، وهو من أشد منتقدي الحكومة الإسرائيلية، رسالة مفتوحة وقعها أكثر من ألف من الأكاديميين والشخصيات البارزة من يهود أستراليا، دعوا فيها الحكومة إلى إلغاء دعوة هرتسوغ.

وتم نشر نحو 3 آلاف من أفراد الشرطة في أنحاء سيدني خلال زيارة هرتسوغ للمدينة.

يذكر أن هرتسوغ كان بدأ زيارته من شاطئ بونداي، إذ وضع إكليلاً من الزهور على نصب تذكارية لضحايا الهجوم.

Thousands protested across Australia today (Monday) against Herzog’s visit to several cities to express solidarity with Jews in Australia following a mass shooting that occurred last year.

Herzog visited Australia this week at the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese following a shooting incident that took place on December 14 at Bondi Beach, resulting in the deaths of 15 people.

The visit sparked anger among some Australians who accuse Herzog of complicity in the deaths of civilians in Gaza. Pro-Palestinian advocacy groups organized protests in cities and towns across the country today (Monday).

In Sydney, thousands gathered in a square in the city’s central business district, listening to speeches and chanting pro-Palestinian slogans.

A protester said, “The Bondi massacre was horrific, but our Australian leadership does not recognize the Palestinian people and the residents of Gaza.” Herzog was accused of evading all questions related to the occupation, and it was stated that this visit is about relations between Australia and Israel, but he is complicit.

For its part, the Australian Jewish Council, one of the staunchest critics of the Israeli government, published an open letter signed by over a thousand academics and prominent figures from Australian Jewry, calling on the government to rescind Herzog’s invitation.

Approximately 3,000 police officers were deployed across Sydney during Herzog’s visit to the city.

It is noted that Herzog began his visit at Bondi Beach, where he laid a wreath at a memorial for the victims of the attack.
