أصبحت شمس نهار القرية ذابلة، وإطلالتها على أودية القرية شاحبة. يبست الغروب والدلوة على الأوتاد؛ وعشّبت عيدان عوارض الآبار؛ وانشغل الأهالي عن طلب الرحمة، بتعليل وتسبيب القحط، الذي لم يمرّ على قريتهم مثله؛ إلا في زمن الحُمريّة؛ ومنهم من قال؛ إلا من يوم دخلت المشعوذة (ماحية) قريتنا محت البركة، واللي في قلبه حثمه على العريفة؛ دفّها عليه وقال؛ الله يسقي زمان شيبته خيران رحمه الله؛ ما كان المطر يونّي ليل الله مع نهاره ومن يوم تشيّخ علينا فقران نشفنا؛ واللي يعزو انقطاع الغيث إلى (المهروش) اللي عوّد عليهم من السفر؛ بشنطه (بِكم) وحدّ الليل يطقّ اصبع، ومرته ترقص وتضرب بالمصقع.
جمع الفقيه الصغار صبح الجمعة، وقال؛ يا حُبّاني استرحموا لنا كمّن ربي ينظر فينا؛ وأبشروا بعدما تعوّدون عليّه بالزبيب واللباب، وحفّظهم الابتهال؛ فانطلقوا بنشوة وامتلأت المساريب باستغاثات براءة صاعدة من النقاء إلى السماء
«يا الله في مطر وسيل؛ يسقي الوادي العليل؛ ويشفي القلب الغليل؛ مدّة الله الكريم؛ ما هي مدات البخيل) والخبثاء الناقمين على العمّ سهيل صاحب الدكان لأنه ما يديّنهم، يضيفون؛ يستحب كهلة سهيل وينزّلها مليل»، وعندما مرّوا ببيت الخطاطة؛ فهدأت أصواتهم؛ وتملكتهم حالة ذهول من هول منظر لم يسبق لهم رؤيته؛ فجارتهم التي حلّت في القرية هي وأمها ووحيدها أبو سنام، ملقيّة ظهرها العاري للشمس، وقاعدة تحجّم أمها، فكّت ممص المحجم من بين براطمها؛ والتفتت عليهم، فانفجعوا من أثر الدم، ونسيوا يشربون من قربتها المعلّقة، وصاحوا في بعضهم؛ اشردوا؛ لا تلحقكم الخطاطة أمها.
عوّدوا على الفقيه؛ تداحشوا على سدة مصراعه، وجغروا «يا فقيه يا فقيه؛ من عطانا الله يعطيه» فبدا عليهم بخريطته؛ وطلب منهم، يفتّحون حثولهم؛ وهو يقبض بيده ويمد سمّ.. سمّ؛ فأقبل عليه ديكان؛ بعطيفه فوق كتفه؛ صفّ بين الورعان وفتح حثله وقال؛ زبّبني يساني ما يساهم؛ ردّ عليه؛ ما فيك صدقة يا ديكان جرمت السدر والغرب بعطيفك لغنمك؛ ما كان للديرة حامي، جرمك الداب الظامي؛ فأقسم ؛ لو ما يزببه ليصفق خريطته بعطيفه وينثر ما فيها للنمل والدجاج، فمدّ له بثلاث قبضات؛ وقال؛ ما بتعلمني اعرفك لا ذكرت بخير، وبعدما ضمن الزبيب واللباب قال؛ إلا بنشدك يا فقيه؛ ذلحين ربي بيمطرك بالورعان، والمطاليق شمطان اللحى ومفتلة الشوارب ما يمطرهم؟ ردّ؛ ما يعزّ على ربنا شيء والورعان ما بعد تحوقوا الذنوب سواتك يا ديكان، ردّ عليه؛ امّا انته يُصلى في طرف ثوبك لا تخليني أعلّم مرتك بالبقرة اللي سرينا عليها أنا وانته وكتفتاها بعمامتك و مقّيت ضرّتها لين اغديتها شلاء وضفعت فوق عمامتك، وضع كفه على فمه؛ مردداً؛ أبتل الله يفشلك إن كان بتفضحني قدام أم المحّالة.
أمطرتْ الغيوم قبل ما تغرب الشمس؛ وأزلة الرعود تهزّ الجبال هزّ، والبروق تخلّي ظلمة البيوت ضحوة؛ وما تسمع إلا الأصوات؛ (عطّها يا بو العطايا؛ م الصباح إلا العشايا)؛ ومما في قلب المذّن؛ يفتح يديه للقُطّار اللي يخرّ فوق رأسه؛ ويرفع نظره إلى السماء؛ ويرفع الصوت لتسمع مرته؛ (يا الله اعطهم لين يغدون كما الكعم فوق وجه السيل يموج بهم من جال إلى جال)، ولم تنقطع السيول ثلاثة شهور؛ وتفقع وجه الأرض بالنجول، ونبت الحبق والخروع والطبّاق والحُرّاق في الطرقات وعلى الجدران، وبارك الله في الأحمية والأودية، وصارت الغنم تغيب في الحيا.
أقبل عليهم من الشرق رعاة، بجلبهم وعيالهم، وحلّوا في شُعبان مجاورة؛ وقال الخرّاز للفقيه؛ يا فقيه قُل لعريفتك الجلّابة عينهم بالربيع؛ وإن كان ما قرعناهم حلّوا في البيت والوادي؛ وزاد؛ ذوله عيال بدوه ياخه ما يحكّ الواحد منهم قفاته إلا بالمشعاب، وتوّهم على بيت العريفة؛ محتزمين بالجنابي؛ وعازمين على المسراح؛ قال العريفة؛ والله يا من يبزّ من عندي قلم، لاغدي ملحه ما يملح، واخلّي عشره ثمان، من صدقكم بتكاوفون شرّابة الدم؟ خلوهم يرعون ويتحمضون؛ ويسقون حلالهم من الكظايم، وبيصدّرون، ويعودون من حيث ما جو، وأضاف «والشقى على الحيله وش يرزاكم أرعو معهم وتحلّبوا واقضموا من اللقط لين تضرسون ولا أطيب من سمرة معهم»، نطّ الفقيه واستقعد قبالته، فلمح العريفة فيه لمحة الشرّ؛ ونشده؛ وشبك لصقت فيّه يا فحمة المرمّد؟ وهرب الخرّاز قائلاً؛ بغدي افلح معي ضيعه؛ وردّ الفقيه؛ الرجاجيل يا عريفة مثل حصى البنا، منهم ربض، ومنهم لزازة؛ علّق عليه مستهزئاً؛ وبتنغيم من رأس خشمه؛ آهو صادق…؛ ايوه.. وانت من ايات فيهم؟ تناول الطاسة ورشف له جغمه، وقال؛ حمانا واشفايانا غدت للرعيان؛ وانت يا كبير القدر والمقام، تحسب ان كل المخاليق يقنون المعروف، فيه من يقناه وفيه من يسلته بين ارجوله، تناول العريفة عمامته واستقام؛ وقال الله لا يجعلك تزيد عن حدّك، برّعناك فوقنا تزرم وتقضم الله يقضم عودك؛ وتحرّك تجاهه ودفعه بيده هامساً؛ قُل عني كذيه، يا بو عقيربان معك فقعة، والناس يتحاشون الفتنة؛ ويدعون الله يسرّها ويقرّها وانت تبغيني أورد جماعتي فوق النار! التقوا بعد العصر في ظُلّة المسيد، ولكي يستثير الشاعر انفعال الفقيه؛ قال؛ ما ودّك يا عريفة نعزم جيراننا رعيان الحلال؟ حكّ العريفة قفاته؛ فعلّق الفقيه؛ هم ونسوانهم، وأضاف؛ ما تشوف العريفة كلما لمح أم البرقع، كنه بارود في ثُمّ المدفع، وغمز للشاعر؛ فبدع؛ (من سرى بالليل الأظلم وهو من غير شونه؛ يلتقي حيّات شوقب وسمّ عقاربه) ضاق العريفة ووقف واستخرج مسبحته من جيبه؛ وحندر في الفقيه وقال؛ ادخلوا مع آذانيه اللي كما محقن السليط، فطلب منه الشاعر يقعد ويتعوّذ من الشيطان؛ ردّ ماني قاعد؛ وأضاف بضيقه وهو معطيهم ظهره (لو كان عنتر قعد بين الهمج لاهمجو به).
The sun of the village day had become withered, and its view over the valleys of the village was pale. The sunset and the bucket had dried on the pegs; the reeds had overgrown the wellheads; and the villagers were preoccupied with justifying and explaining the drought, which had not been seen in their village except during the time of the Hamriya; and some said it was since the day the sorceress (Mahia) entered our village and wiped out the blessing, and those in their hearts were troubled by the knowledge; he pushed it onto him and said; may God water the time of his old age, may God have mercy on him; it was not raining at night with the day of God, and since the time of our old age, we have dried up; and those who attribute the cessation of rain to (Al-Mahroosh) who had gotten used to them from traveling; with his bag (Bikam) and the night would strike a finger, and his wife would dance and beat the drum.
The scholar gathered the children on Friday morning and said; O my beloved, ask for mercy for us, for our Lord is watching over us; and be glad after you get used to it with raisins and nuts, and he taught them the supplication; so they went out with joy, and the channels filled with the cries of innocence rising from purity to the sky.
“O God, with rain and floods; water the ailing valley; and heal the aching heart; the duration of God, the Generous; not like the duration of the stingy) and the malicious who resent Uncle Suhail, the shopkeeper, because he does not lend them, they add; it is preferable for Suhail to descend and let it rain,” and when they passed by the house of the scribe; their voices quieted; and they were overtaken by a state of shock from the horror of a sight they had never seen before; for their neighbor who had settled in the village was there with her mother and her only son, Abu Sanam, exposing her bare back to the sun, and sitting while her mother was shrinking, she had removed the suction cup from between her lips; and she turned to them, and they were horrified by the sight of blood, and forgot to drink from her hanging water skin, and shouted at each other; run away; do not let the scribe’s mother catch you.
They got used to the scholar; they crowded at the threshold of his door, and shouted “O scholar, O scholar; whoever God gives, He gives.” He appeared to them with his map; and asked them to open their bags; while he held with his hand and extended poison… poison; then two roosters approached him; with their necks over his shoulder; they lined up among the righteous and opened their bags and said; “Make me a raisin, my tongue does not contribute;” he replied; “There is no charity in you, O rooster, you have spoiled the sidr and the ghurba with your neck for your sheep; there was no protector for the village, your crime is the thirsty beast;” he swore; “If he does not make me a raisin, I will clap his map with his neck and scatter what is in it for the ants and chickens,” so he extended to him three handfuls; and said; “You will not teach me, I know you only when you mention good, and after he secured the raisins and nuts, he said; “But I ask you, O scholar; now God will rain on the righteous, and the unruly, the bearded and the mustached, will He not rain on them?” He replied; “Nothing is difficult for our Lord, and the righteous have not yet committed sins like you, O rooster,” he replied; “As for you, you are burning at the edge of your garment, do not let me teach your wife about the cow we rode on, you and I, and we tied it with your turban and I made her crippled until I fed her, and I threw her on your turban,” he placed his hand over his mouth; repeating; “May God drown you if you are going to expose me in front of the mother of the sorceress.”
The clouds rained before the sun set; and the rumbling of thunder shook the mountains, and the lightning made the darkness of the houses bright; and all you could hear were the voices; (Give it, O giver; from morning until evening); and from what was in the heart of the rainmaker; he opened his hands to the raindrops falling above his head; and raised his gaze to the sky; and raised his voice so his wife could hear; (O God, give them until they become like the foam above the flood, swirling from side to side), and the floods did not cease for three months; and the face of the earth burst with the sprouts, and basil, and prickly pear, and the burning herb grew in the streets and on the walls, and God blessed the springs and valleys, and the sheep began to disappear in the greenery.
From the east came the shepherds, with their flocks and children, and they settled in the valleys nearby; and the weaver said to the scholar; “O scholar, tell your leader that they are watching them in the spring; and if we do not knock on them, let them settle in the house and the valley;” and he added; “These are the children of the desert, they do not scratch their backs except with a stick, and they headed towards the leader’s house; holding their daggers; and determined to go out; the leader said; “By God, whoever takes a pen from me, I will not give him salt, and I will leave ten of them eight, from your honesty, will you struggle with the blood drinker? Let them graze and sour; and let them water their lawful from the troughs, and they will export, and return from where they came,” he added “And the hardship is on the cunning, what will you get? Graze with them and milk them and nibble from the leftovers until you chew, and there is nothing better than being with them,” the scholar jumped up and sat facing him, and he caught a glimpse of malice in the leader; and asked him; “What is stuck to you, O burnt charcoal?” And the weaver ran away saying; “I will succeed with my lost property;” and the scholar replied; “The men, O leader, are like the pebbles of the builder, some are resting, and some are scattered;” he mocked him; and with a tune from the tip of his nose; “He is truthful…; yes… and you are one of the signs among them?” He took the bowl and sipped from it, and said; “Our protector and our healer have become for the shepherds; and you, O great one, think that all creatures will do good, there are those who do good and there are those who are careless among their legs,” the leader took his turban and stood up; and said; “May God not let you exceed your limits, we have honored you above us, and you gnaw and nibble, may God gnaw your stick;” and he moved towards him and pushed him with his hand whispering; “Say about me like this, O Abu Aqirban, you have a problem, and people avoid the fitna; and pray to God to ease it and settle it, and you want me to bring my people to the fire!” They met after the afternoon in the shade of the mosque, and to provoke the poet to stir the scholar’s emotions; he said; “Would you not, O leader, invite our neighbors, the shepherds of the lawful?” The leader scratched his back; so the scholar commented; “They and their women,” and added; “Do you not see the leader whenever he spots the mother of the veil, he is like gunpowder in the mouth of the cannon,” and he winked at the poet; so he began; (Whoever travels in the darkest night and without a cover; encounters the snakes of Shuqb and the poison of its scorpions) the leader became narrow and stood up and took out his prayer beads from his pocket; and he turned to the scholar and said; “Enter with my ears like a syringe of the slime,” the poet asked him to sit and seek refuge from the devil; he replied, “I will not sit;” and added in his discomfort while turning his back to them; “If Antara sat among the wild, they would have wilded him).
