أثار بطل العالم السابق في سباقات الدراجات روهان دينيس، جدلاً واسعاً بعد انتقاده الحاد لتغطية وسائل الإعلام لقضيته المرتبطة بوفاة زوجته، معتبراً أن ما نُشر عنه انطوى على «سردية مضللة» شوّهت صورته أمام الرأي العام.

وتعود وقائع القضية إلى عام 2023، حين لقيت زوجته، المتسابقة الأولمبية السابقة ميليسا هوسكينز، مصرعها إثر حادثة في إحدى ضواحي مدينة أديليد، بعدما سقطت أثناء تمسّكها بسيارة كان يقودها دينيس عقب مشادة بينهما.

وخلال نظر القضية، أقرّ دينيس بتهمة مشددة تتعلق باحتمال التسبب في ضرر، فيما خلصت المحكمة إلى أنه لم يتحمل المسؤولية الجنائية المباشرة عن وفاة زوجته، رغم إشارته إلى تقصيره في مراعاة سلامتها. وقضى الحكم بسجنه لمدة عام وأربعة أشهر و28 يوماً مع وقف التنفيذ لعامين، إضافة إلى سحب رخصة قيادته لمدة 5 سنوات.

وفي بيان نشره عبر حساباته على منصات التواصل، شدد دينيس على أنه لم يقصد إيذاء زوجته، مؤكداً أن علاقته بها كانت قائمة على المحبة. وانتقد ما وصفه بمحاولات بعض وسائل الإعلام تصويره «زوجاً معنفاً»، معتبراً أن التغطيات تجاوزت حدود المهنية، لا سيما في ما يتعلق بملاحقة أفراد عائلته، بمن فيهم الأطفال.

وقال إن استمرار التناول الإعلامي بهذه الطريقة يُفاقم معاناة أسرته، داعياً المؤسسات الصحفية إلى التراجع وترك العائلة تواجه تبعات الحادثة بعيداً عن الضغوط والتدخلات.

يُذكر أن دينيس حقق إنجازات بارزة في مسيرته، من بينها لقبان عالميان في سباقات ضد الساعة، فضلاً عن ميداليتين أولمبيتين. كما كانت هوسكينز من أبرز نجمات الدراجات في أستراليا، إذ تُوجت بذهبية بطولة العالم 2015 ضمن سباق المطاردة للفرق، ومثلت بلادها في دورتين أولمبيتين.

Former world champion cyclist Rohan Dennis sparked widespread controversy after his sharp criticism of the media coverage surrounding his case related to his wife’s death, considering that what was published about him involved a “misleading narrative” that distorted his image in the eyes of the public.

The events of the case date back to 2023, when his wife, former Olympic competitor Melissa Hoskins, died following an incident in a suburb of Adelaide, after she fell while holding onto a car driven by Dennis following an argument between them.

During the case proceedings, Dennis pleaded guilty to a charge related to the potential causing of harm, while the court concluded that he did not bear direct criminal responsibility for his wife’s death, despite acknowledging his failure to ensure her safety. The ruling sentenced him to one year, four months, and 28 days in prison, suspended for two years, in addition to revoking his driving license for five years.

In a statement published through his social media accounts, Dennis emphasized that he did not intend to harm his wife, affirming that their relationship was based on love. He criticized what he described as attempts by some media outlets to portray him as an “abusive husband,” considering that the coverage exceeded professional boundaries, especially regarding the harassment of his family members, including children.

He stated that the continued media coverage in this manner exacerbates his family’s suffering, calling on journalistic institutions to step back and allow the family to face the aftermath of the incident away from pressure and interference.

It is worth noting that Dennis achieved significant accomplishments in his career, including two world titles in time trials, as well as two Olympic medals. Hoskins was also one of the prominent cycling stars in Australia, having won gold at the 2015 World Championships in the team pursuit event, and represented her country in two Olympic Games.
