في ممرات وردهات وغرف المرضى بمستشفى الملك فيصل التخصصي ومركز الأبحاث بالرياض كان ذلك الجراح الهادئ يلفت أنظارنا ويجعلنا نتساءل فيما بيننا: متى يعود هذا الطبيب إلى منزله ومتى يرتاح، وكيف يستطيع أن يدير كل مهامه الكثيرة المتشعبة بانضباط وإتقان. كنا مجموعة من الأطباء الخريجين الجدد الذين أتيح لهم الالتحاق بالمستشفى، وكنا نتذمّر من ضغط العمل وكثرة المناوبات رغم محدودية المهام الموكلة لنا كمبتدئين، بينما ذلك الجراح الهادئ، يلقننا درساً مهماً بأن مهنة الطب لا وقت محدداً لها، فإما أن تكون لها بكل وقتك وجهدك أو لا تكون.

هكذا كان وما زال البروفيسور زهير الهليس بعد أكثر من 48 عاماً وهو يصافح القلوب المتعبة، ويمنحها علمه وحبه وخبرته ووقته. تراه في غرفة العمليات كأعظم مايسترو يعيد النغم الطبيعي الجميل للقلوب المعطوبة، ثم يستمر صديقاً راعياً لها، في علاقة حميمية دافئة. وأي صداقةٍ عظيمة تلك التي تنشأ بين قلب مريض وطبيب لامسه وتجوّل بين شرايينه وحجراته ومنبع النبض فيه!

استمر البروفيسور زهير الهليس يعمل بصمت وإنكار للذات، وقته كله لمهنته وأبحاثه. أنجز إلى الآن أكثر من 25 ألف عملية قلب، وقام بتأسيس أول سجل لأمراض القلب الخلقية في الشرق الأوسط، وقام بتطوير مركز عالمي متكامل للقلب في المستشفى التخصصي، بالإضافة إلى تدريب أجيال من الجراحين، والمساهمة في تأليف كتب مرجعية في أمراض وجراحة القلب. ولم يتوقف عطاء الدكتور زهير داخل وطنه، فقد قاد إلى الآن أكثر من 60 مهمة جراحية خيرية وتعليمية في أكثر من 20 دولة.

لكل ذلك وأكثر منه، نال تكريماً عالياً من وطنه بمنحه وسام الملك عبدالعزيز من الدرجة الأولى عام 2007، ونال تقديراً أكاديمياً عالمياً بانتخابه رئيساً للجمعية العالمية لجراحة قلب الأطفال وقسطرة القلب الخلقية كأول سعودي وعربي يتولى هذا المنصب. وماذا بعد كل هذه الاستحقاقات العظيمة؟. هناك شيء جديد استحقه الدكتور زهير مؤخراً بكل جدارة، فقد تم تتويجه بجائزة الإنجاز مدى الحياة لعام 2026 من الكلية الأمريكية لأمراض القلب «تقديراً لمسيرته في تطوير جراحة القلب، وإسهاماته العلمية والتعليمية التي أسهمت في الارتقاء بالرعاية القلبية داخل المملكة وخارجها»، وقد تم التتويج خلال الاجتماع السنوي للكلية بحضور نخبة من قيادات أطباء القلب في العالم.

أشعر بزهو عظيم وأنا أتحدث عن أستاذ تتلمذتُ وأجيال كثيرة غيري على يديه. وليست هذه المرة الأولى التي أتحدث فيها عنه، فقد اتصل بي قبل بضع سنوات صاحب صالون الإثنينية الشهير في جدة، الوجيه الأديب الشيخ عبدالمقصود خوجة، رحمه الله، يطلب مني تقديم الدكتور زهير الهليس في حفل احتفاء الصالون به، بحضور جمع كبير من الأدباء والمثقفين والإعلاميين ورجال العلم ووجهاء المجتمع. وللمرة الأولى شعرت أني سأرتبك أمام هيبته لو قدمته ارتجالاً رغم اعتيادي على المنابر، فاضطررت لكتابة تقديمي له، محاولاً سبر عمقه الإنساني قبل علمه، ومنظوره الخاص في التعاطي مع مهنة الطب، وفلسفته في التعامل مع القلوب الموجوعة كإنسان قبل أن يكون جراحاً يُعمل مبضعه في أنسجتها.

مبروك بروفيسور زهير.. مبروك لنا.. مبروك للوطن.. مبروك للإنسانية.

In the corridors, hallways, and patient rooms of King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh, that calm surgeon caught our attention and made us wonder among ourselves: When does this doctor return home, when does he rest, and how can he manage all his numerous and intricate tasks with discipline and precision? We were a group of newly graduated doctors who had the opportunity to join the hospital, and we were complaining about the work pressure and the many shifts despite the limited tasks assigned to us as beginners, while that calm surgeon was teaching us an important lesson that the medical profession has no specific time; you either dedicate all your time and effort to it or you do not pursue it at all.

This is how Professor Zuhair Al-Halais has been and continues to be after more than 48 years, as he touches the weary hearts, offering them his knowledge, love, experience, and time. You see him in the operating room like the greatest maestro restoring the beautiful natural rhythm to the damaged hearts, and then he continues to be a caring friend to them, in a warm intimate relationship. What a great friendship it is that develops between a patient’s heart and a doctor who has touched it, wandered through its arteries and chambers, and found the source of its pulse!

Professor Zuhair Al-Halais has continued to work in silence and self-denial, dedicating all his time to his profession and research. He has performed more than 25,000 heart surgeries to date, established the first registry for congenital heart diseases in the Middle East, developed a comprehensive global heart center at the specialized hospital, in addition to training generations of surgeons and contributing to the authorship of reference books on heart diseases and surgery. Dr. Zuhair’s contributions have not stopped within his homeland; he has led more than 60 charitable and educational surgical missions in over 20 countries so far.

For all of this and more, he received high recognition from his country by being awarded the King Abdulaziz Medal of the First Class in 2007, and he gained international academic recognition by being elected as the president of the World Society for Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Congenital Cardiology, becoming the first Saudi and Arab to hold this position. And what comes after all these great achievements? There is something new that Dr. Zuhair recently deservedly earned; he was crowned with the Lifetime Achievement Award for 2026 from the American College of Cardiology “in recognition of his career in advancing heart surgery and his scientific and educational contributions that have elevated cardiac care both within the Kingdom and abroad,” and the award was presented during the college’s annual meeting in the presence of a select group of leading cardiologists from around the world.

I feel a great pride as I speak about a professor under whom I and many other generations have studied. This is not the first time I have spoken about him; a few years ago, the renowned host of the Monday Salon in Jeddah, the distinguished literary figure Sheikh Abdul Maqsood Khoja, may he rest in peace, contacted me asking me to introduce Dr. Zuhair Al-Halais at the salon’s celebration in his honor, attended by a large gathering of writers, intellectuals, media professionals, scientists, and community dignitaries. For the first time, I felt that I would be nervous in front of his presence if I introduced him spontaneously, despite my familiarity with the podiums, so I had to write my introduction for him, trying to explore his human depth before his knowledge, and his unique perspective on the medical profession, and his philosophy in dealing with wounded hearts as a human being before being a surgeon wielding his scalpel on their tissues.

Congratulations Professor Zuhair.. Congratulations to us.. Congratulations to the nation.. Congratulations to humanity.
