تحولت الأمطار الغزيرة التي هطلت على جنوب إثيوبيا خلال الأيام الماضية إلى كارثة إنسانية، بعدما تسببت انهيارات أرضية مدمرة في سقوط عشرات القتلى وفقدان العشرات تحت أكوام الطين والركام.

وأعلن مسؤولون محليون مقتل ما لا يقل عن 52 شخصاً وفقدان نحو 125 آخرين إثر سلسلة انهيارات أرضية ضربت ثلاث مقاطعات في منطقة جامو زون جنوب البلاد، بعد أسبوع كامل من الأمطار المتواصلة.

ووقعت الكارثة في مقاطعات جاتشو بابا وكامبا وبونكي، حيث انهارت كتل ضخمة من التربة والطين فوق منازل ومناطق سكنية، ما أدى إلى دفن عدد كبير من السكان تحت الأنقاض.

وقال مسفين مانوكا المسؤول عن إدارة الكوارث في منطقة جامو إن فرق الإنقاذ تمكنت حتى الآن من انتشال شخص واحد فقط على قيد الحياة من تحت الطمي، فيما تستمر عمليات البحث وسط ظروف صعبة.

من جهته، أوضح أبيبي أجينا رئيس قسم الاتصالات في مقاطعة جاتشو بابا، أن معظم الضحايا عُثر عليهم مدفونين تحت الطين، مشيراً إلى أن عدد المتضررين الحقيقي قد يكون أكبر مع استمرار عمليات البحث.

ودعا تيلاهون كابيد رئيس ولاية جنوب إثيوبيا الإقليمية، السكان إلى مغادرة المناطق المنخفضة والانتقال إلى أماكن مرتفعة، محذراً من أن الأمطار لا تزال مستمرة وقد تتسبب في كوارث جديدة خلال الأيام المقبلة.

وتُعد الانهيارات الطينية والفيضانات من الكوارث المتكررة في إثيوبيا خلال موسم الأمطار، حيث تؤدي التربة المشبعة بالمياه إلى انهيارات مفاجئة تهدد القرى والمناطق الجبلية.

وكانت البلاد قد شهدت في يوليو 2024 واحدة من أسوأ هذه الكوارث، عندما تسبب انهيار طيني ضخم ناجم عن أمطار غزيرة في مقتل 229 شخصاً في جنوب إثيوبيا.

The heavy rains that have fallen in southern Ethiopia over the past few days have turned into a humanitarian disaster, as devastating landslides have resulted in dozens of fatalities and many others missing under piles of mud and debris.

Local officials announced that at least 52 people have died and around 125 others are missing due to a series of landslides that struck three districts in the Jimma Zone in the south of the country, following a full week of continuous rain.

The disaster occurred in the districts of Gatcho Baba, Kamba, and Bonke, where massive blocks of soil and mud collapsed onto homes and residential areas, burying a large number of residents under the rubble.

Mesfin Manuka, the disaster management official in the Jimma area, stated that rescue teams have so far managed to pull only one person alive from the mud, while search operations continue under difficult conditions.

For his part, Abebe Ajina, the head of communications in Gatcho Baba district, explained that most of the victims were found buried under the mud, noting that the actual number of affected individuals may be higher as search operations continue.

Tilahun Kabede, the president of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region, urged residents to leave low-lying areas and move to higher ground, warning that the rains are still ongoing and could cause new disasters in the coming days.

Mudslides and floods are recurring disasters in Ethiopia during the rainy season, as waterlogged soil leads to sudden collapses that threaten villages and mountainous areas.

The country had experienced one of the worst of these disasters in July 2024, when a massive landslide caused by heavy rains resulted in the deaths of 229 people in southern Ethiopia.
