أعلن مدير وكالة الفضاء الأمريكية (ناسا) جاريد آيزاكمان، أمس (الثلاثاء)، عن خطة طموحة جديدة تقضي باستثمار 20 مليار دولار خلال السنوات السبع القادمة لبناء قاعدة دائمة على سطح القمر، في تحول استراتيجي كبير يشمل تعليق خطط بناء المحطة القمرية المدارية المعروفة باسم «جيتواي».

وقال آيزاكمان خلال فعالية كبرى عقدت في مقر ناسا بواشنطن: «لن يفاجئ أحداً أننا نوقف مشروع جيتواي في شكله الحالي، ونحول التركيز إلى بناء بنية تحتية تدعم عمليات مستمرة ومستدامة على سطح القمر».

وأوضح أن الـ20 مليار دولار ستُصرف عبر عشرات المهمات بالتعاون مع الشركاء التجاريين والدوليين، بهدف إنشاء قاعدة سطحية دائمة قرب القطب الجنوبي للقمر، تشمل مرافق سكنية ومركبات متحركة مضغوطة وأنظمة طاقة نووية، لتمكين وجود بشري طويل الأمد على سطح القمر.

وأكد آيزاكمان أن «القاعدة لن تظهر بين ليلة وضحاها»، مشيراً إلى أن الخطة تتكون من مراحل تدريجية تبدأ بمهمات آلية وروبوتية، وتهدف إلى تحقيق وجود بشري مستدام على القمر.

يأتي هذا الإعلان في إطار إعادة توجيه برنامج أرتميس الذي يهدف إلى إعادة البشر إلى سطح القمر لأول مرة منذ بعثة أبولو 17 عام 1972، حيث كان مشروع جيتواي يُعد محطة مدارية حول القمر لتكون نقطة انطلاق للهبوط على سطحه، لكنه واجه انتقادات متكررة بسبب تكلفته العالية وتأخره، واعتباره تشتيتاً عن الهدف الرئيسي المتمثل في الوجود المستدام على السطح.

ويُعد جاريد آيزاكمان رائد الفضاء الخاص ورئيس شركة Shift4 Payments الذي تولى منصب مدير ناسا في ديسمبر 2025، أول مدير للوكالة من خلفية تجارية غير تقليدية، ويُعرف بقربه من الرئيس دونالد ترمب ودعمه للشراكات التجارية مع شركات مثل سبيس إكس.

تهدف الخطة الجديدة إلى تسريع بناء قاعدة قمرية دائمة تُعد خطوة أولى نحو استكشاف المريخ، وتعزيز الريادة الأمريكية في الفضاء أمام المنافسة الصينية والروسية. ومن المتوقع أن يؤدي إعادة تخصيص الميزانية إلى إعادة تشكيل عقود بمليارات الدولارات مع الشركات الأمريكية.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman announced yesterday (Tuesday) an ambitious new plan to invest $20 billion over the next seven years to build a permanent base on the surface of the Moon, marking a significant strategic shift that includes suspending plans for the lunar orbital station known as “Gateway.”

Isaacman stated during a major event held at NASA’s headquarters in Washington: “It should not surprise anyone that we are halting the Gateway project in its current form and shifting our focus to building the infrastructure that supports continuous and sustainable operations on the Moon’s surface.”

He explained that the $20 billion will be spent through dozens of missions in collaboration with commercial and international partners, aiming to establish a permanent surface base near the Moon’s south pole, which will include residential facilities, compact mobile vehicles, and nuclear power systems to enable long-term human presence on the Moon’s surface.

Isaacman emphasized that “the base will not appear overnight,” noting that the plan consists of gradual phases starting with robotic and automated missions, aimed at achieving sustainable human presence on the Moon.

This announcement comes as part of a reorientation of the Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the Moon’s surface for the first time since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. The Gateway project was intended to be an orbital station around the Moon serving as a launch point for landing on its surface, but it faced repeated criticism due to its high costs and delays, and was seen as a distraction from the main goal of sustainable presence on the surface.

Jared Isaacman, a private astronaut and CEO of Shift4 Payments, who took over as NASA Administrator in December 2025, is the first agency head from an unconventional commercial background and is known for his closeness to President Donald Trump and his support for commercial partnerships with companies like SpaceX.

The new plan aims to accelerate the construction of a permanent lunar base, considered a first step toward Mars exploration, and to enhance American leadership in space amid competition from China and Russia. The budget reallocation is expected to reshape multi-billion dollar contracts with American companies.
