لقي ما لا يقل عن 66 شخصًا مصرعهم إثر تحطم طائرة نقل عسكرية كولومبية كانت تقل 121 شخصًا، معظمهم من الجنود، وذلك بعد وقت قصير من إقلاعها في جنوب البلاد، وفق ما أعلنته السلطات.

وأوضح وزير الدفاع، بيدرو سانشيز، أن الحادثة وقعت أثناء إقلاع طائرة من طراز Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules من بلدة بويرتو ليغيزامو الواقعة في عمق منطقة الأمازون الجنوبية قرب الحدود مع بيرو، حيث كانت تقل قوات من الجيش.

وأظهرت صور ومقاطع فيديو تداولتها وسائل الإعلام تصاعد سحب كثيفة من الدخان الأسود من موقع التحطم، فيما هرعت شاحنات تقل جنودًا إلى المكان، وساهم سكان محليون في نقل المصابين وإخماد النيران التي اندلعت وسط منطقة كثيفة الأشجار.

وذكرت القوات الجوية الكولومبية أن 77 شخصًا تم إنقاذهم من موقع الحادثة وهم مصابون، بينما لا تزال السلطات تحقق لتحديد الحصيلة النهائية للضحايا.

وقال قائد القوات الجوية، كارلوس فرناندو سيلفا، إن ملابسات الحادثة لم تتضح بعد، مضيفًا أن الطائرة واجهت مشكلة وسقطت على بعد نحو كيلومترين من المطار.

من جانبه، وصف الرئيس الكولومبي غوستافو بيترو الحادثة بأنها مأساة مروعة ما كان ينبغي أن تحدث، مشيرًا إلى أنه سعى خلال السنوات الماضية لتحديث أسطول الطائرات العسكرية، لكنه واجه عقبات بيروقراطية.

ودعا بيترو إلى محاسبة المسؤولين المقصرين، مؤكدًا أنه يجب إبعاد أي مسؤول مدني أو عسكري غير قادر على تحمل هذه المسؤولية.

كما أعرب مرشحو الانتخابات الرئاسية القادمة عن حزنهم إزاء الحادثة، مطالبين بإجراء تحقيقات شاملة لكشف أسبابه، خصوصا مع اقتراب الجولة الأولى من الانتخابات في مايو القادم.

وأكد وزير الدفاع إرسال فرق إنقاذ إلى موقع التحطم، إلى جانب تجهيز طائرتين طبيتين لنقل المصابين إلى مستشفيات العاصمة بوغوتا ومدن أخرى.

وأشار سانشيز إلى أن الطائرة كانت صالحة للطيران وأن طاقمها مؤهل بالكامل، مضيفًا أنه يمكن استبعاد فرضية تعرضها لهجوم من الجماعات المسلحة النشطة في البلاد، في ظل استمرار التحقيقات.

من جهتها، أكدت شركة لوكهيد مارتن استعدادها للتعاون مع السلطات الكولومبية في التحقيق.

وتُعد طائرات C-130 من بين أقدم طائرات النقل العسكري، إذ بدأ استخدامها منذ خمسينيات القرن الماضي، وقد اعتمدتها كولومبيا منذ أواخر الستينيات، مع تحديث بعض طرازاتها أخيرا بدعم أمريكي.

وتأتي هذه الحادثة بعد أسابيع من تحطم طائرة مماثلة تابعة لسلاح الجو البوليفي في مدينة إل ألتو، ما أسفر عن مقتل أكثر من 20 شخصًا وإصابة العشرات.

At least 66 people have died following the crash of a Colombian military transport plane that was carrying 121 people, mostly soldiers, shortly after takeoff in the south of the country, according to authorities.

Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez explained that the incident occurred during the takeoff of a Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules aircraft from the town of Puerto Leguizamo, located deep in the southern Amazon region near the border with Peru, where it was transporting army troops.

Images and videos circulated by the media showed thick plumes of black smoke rising from the crash site, while trucks carrying soldiers rushed to the scene, and local residents helped transport the injured and extinguish the fires that broke out in the dense wooded area.

The Colombian Air Force reported that 77 people were rescued from the crash site and are injured, while authorities are still investigating to determine the final toll of the victims.

Air Force Commander Carlos Fernando Silva stated that the circumstances of the incident are not yet clear, adding that the plane encountered a problem and crashed about two kilometers from the airport.

For his part, Colombian President Gustavo Petro described the incident as a horrific tragedy that should not have happened, noting that he has sought to modernize the military aircraft fleet in recent years but faced bureaucratic obstacles.

Petro called for accountability for negligent officials, emphasizing that any civilian or military official unable to bear this responsibility should be removed.

Presidential election candidates also expressed their sorrow over the incident, calling for comprehensive investigations to uncover its causes, especially with the first round of elections approaching in May.

Defense Minister Sanchez confirmed the dispatch of rescue teams to the crash site, along with the preparation of two medical aircraft to transport the injured to hospitals in the capital Bogotá and other cities.

Sanchez noted that the aircraft was airworthy and that its crew was fully qualified, adding that the possibility of it being attacked by armed groups active in the country can be ruled out, as investigations continue.

For its part, Lockheed Martin has confirmed its readiness to cooperate with Colombian authorities in the investigation.

The C-130 aircraft are among the oldest military transport planes, having been in use since the 1950s, and Colombia has operated them since the late 1960s, with some of their models recently updated with American support.

This incident comes weeks after a similar plane belonging to the Bolivian Air Force crashed in El Alto, resulting in the deaths of more than 20 people and injuries to dozens.
