كشفت صحيفة «آي بيبر» البريطانية تفاصيل مكالمة هاتفية متوترة بين الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب برئيس الوزراء البريطاني كير ستارمر، على خلفية امتناع لندن عن الانضمام إلى الهجوم الأمريكي الإسرائيلي على إيران.

أسباب رفض دعم الضربات الأمريكية

وبحسب الصحيفة، استمرت المكالمة نحو 20 دقيقة بعد ظهر الأحد الماضي، وجاءت عقب أيام من انتقادات علنية وجهها ترمب إلى رئيس الوزراء البريطاني.

ونقلت الصحيفة عن مصدر مطلع على فحوى الاتصال أن ترمب لم يُبدِ اهتماما يُذكر بمحاولة رئيس الوزراء البريطاني شرح أسباب رفض حكومته دعم الضربات الأمريكية.

وكان ترمب انتقد علنا قرار ستارمر الأولي رفض السماح باستخدام قواعد بريطانية لدعم العمليات العسكرية الأمريكية ضد إيران، مشيرا إلى أن ذلك القرار أجبر الطائرات الأمريكية على التحليق لساعات إضافية خلال الأيام الأولى من العمليات العسكرية.

زيارة ملكية في ظل التوترات

وذكرت الصحيفة أن ستارمر أثار خلال المكالمة مسألة زيارة الدولة المرتقبة للملك تشارلز إلى واشنطن، في محاولة لاحتواء التوتر الذي خيم على العلاقات بين البلدين.

ولفتت إلى أن ستارمر سعى، منذ توليه رئاسة الحكومة، إلى الاستفادة من التقدير الذي يبديه ترمب للعائلة المالكة البريطانية في مسعى لتخفيف التوتر في علاقته بالرئيس الأمريكي.

ورغم التوتر المتصاعد، أفادت الصحيفة بأن التحضيرات لزيارة الملك تشارلز والملكة كاميلا إلى الولايات المتحدة لا تزال ماضية.

وكان نواب من حزبي العمال والديمقراطيين الأحرار دعوا رئيس الوزراء إلى إلغاء الزيارة من 3 أيام إلى واشنطن، احتجاجا على الانتقادات الحادة التي وجهها ترمب لموقف الحكومة البريطانية من الحرب على إيران.

وأشارت الصحيفة إلى أن تصريحات ترمب عن ستارمر وقوله إن رئيس الوزراء البريطاني «لا يرقى إلى ونستون تشرشل»- أثارت مخاوف من توتر قد يكون الأشد في العلاقات البريطانية الأمريكية منذ عقود.

محاولة للحفاظ على التعاون

وبحسب الصحيفة، رأى مسؤولون في وايتهول أن الزيارة المرتقبة للملك والملكة في نهاية أبريل القادم، والمتزامنة مع الذكرى الـ250 لتأسيس الولايات المتحدة، قد تمثل فرصة لإحياء ما يُعرف في الخطاب الدبلوماسي بـ«العلاقة الخاصة» بين لندن وواشنطن.

وأفادت الصحيفة بأن زيارات الدولة تُنظم عادة باقتراح من الحكومة، فيما امتنع كل من قصر باكنغهام وداونينغ ستريت عن التعليق على زيارات لم يُعلن عنها رسميا.

وذكرت أن التحضيرات للزيارة مستمرة «من دون أي تغيير»، في حين اكتفى المتحدث باسم ستارمر بالقول إن أي زيارة دولة لم تُؤكد رسميا بعد.

التعاون العسكري لم يتوقف

من جهته، دافع ستارمر عن موقف حكومته، مؤكدا أن التعاون العسكري والاستخباراتي بين البلدين لم يتوقف. ونقلت الصحيفة قوله إن الولايات المتحدة تستخدم حاليا قواعد جوية بريطانية بموجب اتفاق بين الجانبين، وإن تبادل المعلومات الاستخباراتية بين لندن وواشنطن يجري بشكل يومي.

وأضاف أن أفرادا من الجيشين البريطاني والأمريكي يعملون في القواعد نفسها، وأن البلدين يتعاونان في حماية تلك المنشآت العسكرية.

ووصفت مصادر في داونينغ ستريت المكالمة بأنها «بناءة»، لكن البيان الرسمي الصادر عن مكتب رئيس الوزراء اكتفى بالإشارة إلى أن الزعيمين ناقشا التعاون في الشرق الأوسط واتفقا على البقاء على التواصل.

Reasons for Refusing to Support the U.S. Strikes

According to the newspaper, the call lasted about 20 minutes last Sunday afternoon, coming days after Trump publicly criticized the British Prime Minister.

The newspaper quoted a source familiar with the content of the call, stating that Trump showed little interest in Prime Minister Starmer’s attempts to explain his government’s reasons for refusing to support the U.S. strikes.

Trump had publicly criticized Starmer’s initial decision to deny the use of British bases to support U.S. military operations against Iran, noting that this decision forced American planes to fly for additional hours during the early days of military operations.

Royal Visit Amid Tensions

The newspaper reported that Starmer raised the issue of the upcoming state visit of King Charles to Washington during the call, in an attempt to contain the tension that has overshadowed relations between the two countries.

It pointed out that Starmer has sought, since taking office, to leverage Trump’s appreciation for the British royal family in an effort to ease the tension in his relationship with the U.S. President.

Despite the escalating tensions, the newspaper stated that preparations for King Charles and Queen Camilla’s visit to the United States are still ongoing.

Members of the Labour and Liberal Democrat parties had called on the Prime Minister to cancel the three-day visit to Washington in protest against Trump’s sharp criticisms of the British government’s stance on the war in Iran.

The newspaper noted that Trump’s remarks about Starmer, stating that the British Prime Minister “does not measure up to Winston Churchill,” have raised concerns about a potential strain that could be the worst in British-American relations in decades.

Efforts to Maintain Cooperation

According to the newspaper, officials in Whitehall believe that the anticipated visit of the King and Queen at the end of April, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, could represent an opportunity to revive what is known in diplomatic discourse as the “special relationship” between London and Washington.

The newspaper reported that state visits are usually organized at the suggestion of the government, while both Buckingham Palace and Downing Street refrained from commenting on visits that have not been officially announced.

It mentioned that preparations for the visit are continuing “without any changes,” while Starmer’s spokesperson merely stated that no state visit has been officially confirmed yet.

Military Cooperation Has Not Stopped

For his part, Starmer defended his government’s position, confirming that military and intelligence cooperation between the two countries has not ceased. The newspaper quoted him as saying that the United States is currently using British air bases under an agreement between the two sides, and that intelligence sharing between London and Washington occurs daily.

He added that personnel from both the British and American militaries are working at the same bases, and that the two countries are cooperating in protecting those military facilities.

Sources in Downing Street described the call as “constructive,” but the official statement from the Prime Minister’s office only indicated that the leaders discussed cooperation in the Middle East and agreed to remain in contact.
