مرّ عقدان منذ تلك الليلة التي هزّت بريطانيا بأكبر سرقة نقدية في تاريخها، لكن الغنيمة الضخمة التي استولى عليها اللصوص لا تزال مفقودة، وسط تكهنات بأن جزءًا منها قد يكون دُفن أو تحلّل بمرور الزمن.

في فبراير 2006، نفذت عصابة مسلحة عملية سطو جريئة على مستودع شركة سيكيوريتاس في تونبريدج، كينت. واستولت العصابة على نحو 53 مليون جنيه إسترليني (65 مليون دولار)، في عملية وصفها الخبراء بـ«الجرأة غير المسبوقة».

ووفقًا للتحقيقات، تنكر اللصوص بزي رجال الشرطة، واحتجزوا المدير كولين ديكسون وعائلته كرهائن قبل إجباره على منحهم حق الوصول إلى المستودع، بينما جرى تحميل الأموال على شاحنة وسط توتر وفوضى ليلية هائلة.

ورغم محاكمة بعض المتورطين، لا يزال 32 مليون جنيه إسترليني دون أثر. ويقول قائد شرطة كينت تيم سميث: «مع مرور الزمن، فإن احتمال العثور على كامل المبلغ يتضاءل، خصوصًا أن الأوراق النقدية كانت من النوع القديم القابل للتحلل».

ويضيف أن دفن الأموال أو إهمالها لسنوات قد يعني أن جزءًا كبيرًا دُمّر أو تعفن، مما يحول القضية إلى لغز مستمر حتى اليوم.

أما رئيس المباحث كون سميث فتذكر اللحظة التي اكتشف فيها حجم الأموال المستهدفة، قائلًا: «كان إدراك أن البلاد أمام جريمة بهذا الحجم صدمة حقيقية، خصوصًا لحجم الرعب الذي شعرت به عائلة ديكسون».

وكانت عملية الاحتجاز والرهائن هي جوهر السرقة، ما جعلها واحدة من أكثر عمليات السطو إثارة وجرأة في تاريخ المملكة المتحدة.

وأوضح الكاتب هوارد ساونز المتخصص في جرائم السطو أن العصابة لم تكن تتوقع ضخامة الأموال داخل المستودع، وأن حجم الغنيمة نفسه أصبح عبئًا عليهم. فحاول بعضهم تحويل حصصهم بطرق بدائية، بينما اختفى أحدهم في الكاريبي، تاركًا وراءه لغزًا مستمرًا حتى اليوم.

دعوة لإعادة التحقيق

ومع اقتراب الذكرى العشرين للسرقة، جدّدت الشرطة دعوتها للجمهور: «أي تفصيل صغير قد يكون كافيًا لإعادة فتح التحقيق».

وتؤكد السلطات البريطانية أن الهدف لا يزال تحقيق العدالة للضحايا، في قضية تصنف حتى الآن كواحدة من أكثر جرائم السطو إثارة وغموضًا في بريطانيا الحديثة.

Two decades have passed since that night that shook Britain with the largest cash robbery in its history, but the massive loot seized by the thieves remains missing, amid speculation that part of it may have been buried or deteriorated over time.

In February 2006, an armed gang executed a bold robbery at a Securitas warehouse in Tonbridge, Kent. The gang seized around £53 million ($65 million) in an operation described by experts as having “unprecedented audacity.”

According to investigations, the thieves disguised themselves as police officers, holding manager Colin Dixon and his family hostage before forcing him to grant them access to the warehouse, while the money was loaded onto a truck amidst immense tension and nighttime chaos.

Despite the trial of some of those involved, £32 million remains unaccounted for. Kent Police Chief Tim Smith says, “As time goes on, the likelihood of finding the full amount diminishes, especially since the banknotes were of the old type that can deteriorate.”

He adds that burying the money or neglecting it for years could mean that a large portion has been destroyed or decayed, turning the case into an ongoing mystery to this day.

Detective Chief Inspector Con Smith recalls the moment he realized the scale of the targeted money, saying, “The realization that the country was facing a crime of this magnitude was a real shock, especially given the level of terror felt by the Dixon family.”

The hostage-taking aspect was at the heart of the robbery, making it one of the most exciting and audacious heists in UK history.

Writer Howard Saunter, a specialist in robbery crimes, explained that the gang did not expect the enormity of the money inside the warehouse, and the size of the loot itself became a burden for them. Some tried to convert their shares in primitive ways, while one disappeared in the Caribbean, leaving behind a mystery that continues to this day.

Call for Reinvestigation

As the twentieth anniversary of the robbery approaches, the police have renewed their appeal to the public: “Any small detail could be enough to reopen the investigation.”

British authorities emphasize that the goal remains to achieve justice for the victims, in a case that is still classified as one of the most exciting and mysterious robberies in modern Britain.
