لقي ما لا يقل عن 37 عامل مناجم مصرعهم نتيجة تسمم بغاز أول أكسيد الكربون في موقع تعدين بولاية بلاتو وسط نيجيريا، وفقًا لوكالة «رويترز».

ووقعت الحادثة، أمس (الأربعاء)، داخل حفرة تعدين في منطقة كامباني التابعة لبلدية واسي، كما تم نقل 25 عاملًا آخرين إلى المستشفيات لتلقي العلاج إثر تعرضهم للاختناق.

وقال وزير تنمية المعادن الصلبة في نيجيريا، ديلي ألاك، إن الموقع عبارة عن منجم رصاص مهجور يحتوي على مخزونات معدنية قابلة لإطلاق غازات سامة، وأوضح أن بعض السكان المحليين، الذين لم يكونوا على دراية بخطورة الانبعاثات، دخلوا النفق لاستخراج المعادن، ما أدى إلى استنشاقهم الغاز السام.

وعلى إثر الحادثة، أصدر الوزير قرارًا بإغلاق مناطق التعدين المشمولة بالرخصة رقم 11810، التي تديرها شركة «سوليد يونيت نيجيريا ليميتد» والمملوكة لعبد الله دان-تشاينا في منطقة زوراق، بعد وفاة عدد من الأهالي الذين يُعتقد أنهم كانوا يعملون في حفرة تنبعث منها غازات خطرة.

وأشار التقرير الأمني إلى أن الضحايا، الذين تتراوح أعمارهم بين 20 و35 عامًا، لقوا حتفهم أثناء عملهم تحت الأرض بسبب استنشاق الغاز.

من جهتها، ذكرت حكومة ولاية بلاتو أن عددًا كبيرًا من الأشخاص يُخشى أن يكونوا قد لقوا مصرعهم، دون تحديد حصيلة نهائية، مؤكدة أن مصابين آخرين يتلقون العلاج في مستشفيات قريبة.

وفرضت قوات الأمن طوقًا أمنيًا حول الموقع لمنع الدخول إليه وتفادي وقوع ضحايا جدد، في حين أمرت الحكومة الفيدرالية بالإغلاق الفوري لجميع أنشطة التعدين في المنطقة المتضررة إلى حين انتهاء التحقيقات.

وتشير تقارير إلى أن غالبية أنشطة التعدين في نيجيريا تتم بصورة غير قانونية، مع تدابير سلامة محدودة وافتقار العمال إلى معدات الحماية الأساسية.

At least 37 miners have died from carbon monoxide poisoning at a mining site in Plateau State, central Nigeria, according to Reuters.

The incident occurred yesterday (Wednesday) inside a mining pit in the Kampani area of the Wase municipality, and 25 other workers were taken to hospitals for treatment after suffering from asphyxiation.

Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, stated that the site is an abandoned lead mine containing mineral deposits capable of releasing toxic gases. He explained that some local residents, who were unaware of the dangers of the emissions, entered the tunnel to extract minerals, leading to their inhalation of the toxic gas.

In response to the incident, the minister issued a decision to close the mining areas covered by license number 11810, which is managed by Solid Unit Nigeria Limited and owned by Abdullahi Dan-China in the Zorak area, following the deaths of several locals believed to have been working in a pit emitting hazardous gases.

The security report indicated that the victims, aged between 20 and 35, died while working underground due to gas inhalation.

For its part, the Plateau State government stated that a large number of people are feared to have died, without specifying a final toll, confirming that other injured individuals are receiving treatment in nearby hospitals.

Security forces have cordoned off the site to prevent entry and avoid further casualties, while the federal government has ordered the immediate closure of all mining activities in the affected area until investigations are completed.

Reports indicate that the majority of mining activities in Nigeria are conducted illegally, with limited safety measures and a lack of basic protective equipment for workers.
