‏قدم المغربي مهدي بنعطية استقالته من منصبه مديراً رياضياً لنادي مارسيليا الفرنسي، بسبب الأجواء المحيطة بالنادي التي عجلت بإقالته، رغم محاولاته لتهدئه الأوضاع داخل النادي. جاء ذلك خلال بيان رسمي قال فيه: «أنصار مارسيليا، أهل مارسيليا، أنتم تعرفون صراحتي وشفافيتي؛ لذا، نظراً للتوترات المحيطة بالإدارة، فقد وضعت فعلياً (ولم أقترح فقط) استقالتي، لأن النادي في رأيي يأتي دائماً قبل الأفراد، ولا أريد أن يصبح وجودي عائقاً أو عبئاً على التنظيم والتطور لهذا السبب، وبعد تفكير طويل، تحملت مسؤولياتي وقررت إنهاء تعاوني مع مارسيليا». وأضاف: «أغادر وأنا أشعر بأنني بذلت أقصى ما في وسعي على المستوى المهني، لكن مع أسف لعدم تمكني من تهدئة الأجواء المحيطة بالفريق، الذي في رأيي يملك القدرات الكافية لتحقيق الأهداف المطلوبة»، مطالباً الجماهير بالوقوف خلف ناديهم وعدم التخلي عنه، متمنياً للاعبين والجهاز الفني النجاح هذا الموسم.

After long consideration, I have taken responsibility and decided to end my cooperation with Marseille.” He added: “I leave feeling that I have done my utmost professionally, but with regret for not being able to calm the atmosphere surrounding the team, which, in my opinion, has the sufficient capabilities to achieve the required goals,” urging the fans to stand behind their club and not abandon it, wishing the players and coaching staff success this season.
