أعلنت كاثرين روملر، رئيسة الشؤون القانونية والمستشار العام في بنك «غولدمان ساكس» العملاق، مساء (الخميس)، استقالتها من منصبها، في خطوة مفاجئة تأتي على خلفية التداعيات المتسارعة لنشر وزارة العدل الأمريكية دفعة جديدة من ملايين الوثائق والمراسلات المتعلقة برجل الأعمال الراحل جيفري إبستين، المدان بجرائم الاستغلال الجنسي للقاصرات والاتجار الجنسي.

وقالت روملر في بيان رسمي: «أبلغت اليوم ديفيد سولومون، الرئيس التنفيذي لـ«غولدمان ساكس»، بقراري التنحي عن منصبي كرئيسة الشؤون القانونية والمستشار العام، مسؤوليتي الأولى هي مصلحة البنك، وقد اتخذت هذا القرار حفاظاً عليها». وأضافت أنها تأسف لأي إحراج قد يسببه الأمر للمؤسسة.

وتأتي الاستقالة بعد أيام قليلة فقط من تصاعد التقارير الإعلامية التي ركزت على مراسلات بريد إلكتروني ممتدة على سنوات بين روملر وإبستين، والتي كشفت عنها الدفعة الأخيرة من الوثائق التي أفرجت عنها وزارة العدل في يناير وفبراير 2026.

وتشمل هذه المراسلات مخاطبات ودية وصف فيها إبستين بـ«عمه جيفري»، وشكرته على هدايا فاخرة.. أحذية، وحقائب، وساعات، وناقشت معه أموراً شخصية مثل البحث عن شقة جديدة، وقص الشعر بناءً على نصيحته، بل ووصفته في إحدى الرسائل بأنه «أخ أكبر» أو «صديق مقرب».

كما أظهرت بعض الوثائق أن روملر قدمت له نصائح حول كيفية التعامل مع الأسئلة الصحفية الصعبة بشأن جرائمه الجنسية، وكيفية تجنب التغطية الإعلامية السلبية، وذلك حتى بعد إدانته الأولى عام 2008.

وكانت شغلت كاثرين روملر منصب المستشارة القانونية للبيت الأبيض في عهد الرئيس باراك أوباما (2011-2014)، ثم عملت في القطاع الخاص قبل انضمامها إلى «غولدمان ساكس» عام 2020 كرئيسة للشؤون القانونية، وهي واحدة من أعلى المناصب القانونية أجراً في «وول ستريت».

ووصفت علاقتها بإبستين سابقاً بأنها «مهنية بحتة» في سياق عملها كمحامية دفاع جنائي، لكن الوثائق الجديدة أظهرت طابعاً شخصياً وثيقاً أكثر مما أقرت به.

Katherine Rumler, the Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel at the giant bank “Goldman Sachs,” announced her resignation from her position on Thursday evening, in a surprising move that comes in the wake of the rapid repercussions following the U.S. Department of Justice’s release of a new batch of millions of documents and correspondence related to the late businessman Jeffrey Epstein, who was convicted of crimes involving the sexual exploitation of minors and sex trafficking.

Rumler stated in an official statement: “I informed David Solomon, the CEO of ‘Goldman Sachs,’ today of my decision to step down from my position as Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel; my primary responsibility is the bank’s interest, and I made this decision to protect it.” She added that she regrets any embarrassment this may cause the institution.

The resignation comes just a few days after media reports intensified, focusing on extensive email correspondence spanning years between Rumler and Epstein, which were revealed in the latest batch of documents released by the Justice Department in January and February 2026.

This correspondence includes friendly exchanges in which Epstein referred to himself as “Uncle Jeffrey,” thanked him for luxurious gifts… shoes, bags, watches, and discussed personal matters such as looking for a new apartment and getting a haircut based on his advice, even describing him in one message as a “big brother” or “close friend.”

Some documents also showed that Rumler provided him with advice on how to handle difficult press questions regarding his sexual crimes and how to avoid negative media coverage, even after his first conviction in 2008.

Katherine Rumler previously served as the White House Counsel during President Barack Obama’s administration (2011-2014), then worked in the private sector before joining “Goldman Sachs” in 2020 as Chief Legal Officer, one of the highest-paid legal positions on Wall Street.

She had previously described her relationship with Epstein as “purely professional” in the context of her work as a criminal defense attorney, but the new documents revealed a more intimate personal nature than she had acknowledged.
