كصحافي عايش عن قرب سنوات الإرهاب التي ضربت العاصمة الرياض، أستطيع اليوم أن أستشعر بوضوح حجم التحوّل الذي تعيشه المملكة العربية السعودية. لم تكن تلك السنوات عابرة في الذاكرة الوطنية؛ كانت أياماً عصيبة ومؤلمة، شهدت جرائم مرعبة استهدفت الأمن والاستقرار، وزرعت الخوف في المجتمع. أكثر من عشرات الحوادث الإرهابية، بتوقيتها العنيف ورسائلها الدموية، كانت كفيلة بإسقاط دول أو إدخالها في دوامات فوضى طويلة الأمد. غير أن ما حدث في السعودية كان مختلفاً؛ إذ واجهت الدولة تلك التحديات بشجاعة وحسم، مستندة إلى تماسك مؤسساتها ودعم مجتمعها.

لقد شكّلت تلك المرحلة اختباراً حقيقياً لقدرة الدولة على حماية نفسها ومواطنيها. ومع مرور الوقت، تراجعت الأعمال الإرهابية بشكل لافت حتى انخفضت إلى مستوى الصفر، في مؤشر واضح على نجاح الاستراتيجية الشاملة التي انتهجتها المملكة. لم يكن الأمر مجرد مواجهة أمنية تقليدية، بل كان مشروعاً متكاملاً لمحاربة التطرف من جذوره، أمنياً وفكرياً في آنٍ واحد. فإلى جانب الجهود الاستخباراتية والميدانية الدقيقة، أطلقت برامج فكرية متخصصة، وعزّزت الخطاب الديني الوسطي، وفتحت المجال أمام مراجعات فكرية عميقة ساهمت في تحصين المجتمع.

هذا التحوّل لم ينعكس فقط على الجانب الأمني، بل أسهم أيضاً في تعزيز مسار الانفتاح الذي تشهده المملكة اليوم. أصبحت السعودية أكثر حضوراً على الساحة الدولية، وأكثر ثقة في تقديم نموذجها الخاص في التحديث والتنمية، دون التفريط في هويتها. ويعد ذلك دليلاً مُهماً على التغيير الذي شهدته البلاد في السنوات الأخيرة، بقيادة طموحة تسعى إلى نقل المملكة إلى مرحلة جديدة قوامها الاستقرار والانفتاح والتنمية المستدامة.

ومن المهم التأكيد أن السعودية لم تكن يوماً دولة تطرف أو عدوة للأديان، بل هي دولة تعتز بخصوصيتها الدينية والثقافية. شعبها يحمل رؤية دينية عميقة، بحكم كونها مهد الإسلام ومنبع الرسالة، وهو ما يمنحها مسؤولية مضاعفة في ترسيخ قيم الاعتدال والتسامح. صحيح أن الإرهاب حاول استغلال بعض الشعارات الدينية لتبرير جرائمه، لكن المجتمع السعودي كان أول من اكتوى بناره، وأول من رفضه وواجهه.

إن سردية ربط السعودية بالتطرّف والإرهاب لم تعد ذات جدوى، بل تبدو اليوم بعيدة عن الواقع. فالدولة التي عانت من الإرهاب وواجهته بحزم، وتمكّنت من تحييد خطره وإبعاده عن مجتمعها، لا يمكن اختزالها في اتهامات قديمة أو تصوّرات نمطية. لقد كان هناك دور أمني حاسم، ودور فكري لا يقل أهمية، تكاملا ليقودا المملكة إلى بر الأمان في مرحلة بالغة الحساسية من تاريخ المنطقة.

ورغم محاولات بعض الخصوم إعادة إنتاج خطاب يربط السعودية بالإرهاب والتطرف، فإن الوقائع على الأرض تقول غير ذلك. التجربة السعودية في مواجهة الإرهاب تقدّم مثالاً على قدرة الدول على تحويل المحن إلى فرص، وعلى أن الحسم الأمني حين يقترن بالإصلاح الفكري والاجتماعي يمكن أن يصنع تحوّلاً حقيقياً ومستداماً.

As a journalist who closely experienced the years of terrorism that struck the capital, Riyadh, I can today clearly sense the magnitude of the transformation that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is undergoing. Those years were not fleeting in the national memory; they were difficult and painful days, marked by horrific crimes that targeted security and stability, instilling fear in society. More than dozens of violent terrorist incidents, with their brutal timing and bloody messages, were enough to topple nations or plunge them into prolonged chaos. However, what happened in Saudi Arabia was different; the state faced those challenges with courage and decisiveness, relying on the cohesion of its institutions and the support of its community.

This phase represented a real test of the state’s ability to protect itself and its citizens. Over time, terrorist acts significantly declined until they reached zero, a clear indicator of the success of the comprehensive strategy adopted by the Kingdom. It was not merely a traditional security confrontation, but a comprehensive project to combat extremism from its roots, both security-wise and ideologically at the same time. Alongside precise intelligence and field efforts, specialized intellectual programs were launched, the moderate religious discourse was strengthened, and space was opened for deep intellectual reviews that contributed to fortifying society.

This transformation has not only reflected on the security aspect but has also contributed to enhancing the path of openness that the Kingdom is witnessing today. Saudi Arabia has become more present on the international stage and more confident in presenting its own model of modernization and development, without compromising its identity. This serves as an important testament to the changes the country has experienced in recent years, under ambitious leadership that seeks to transition the Kingdom to a new phase characterized by stability, openness, and sustainable development.

It is important to emphasize that Saudi Arabia has never been a state of extremism or an enemy of religions; rather, it is a country that takes pride in its religious and cultural uniqueness. Its people carry a profound religious vision, given that it is the cradle of Islam and the source of the message, which grants it a multiplied responsibility in instilling the values of moderation and tolerance. It is true that terrorism attempted to exploit some religious slogans to justify its crimes, but the Saudi community was the first to suffer from its flames and the first to reject and confront it.

The narrative linking Saudi Arabia to extremism and terrorism is no longer valid; it now seems far removed from reality. The state that suffered from terrorism and faced it firmly, managing to neutralize its danger and keep it away from its society, cannot be reduced to old accusations or stereotypical perceptions. There has been a crucial security role, and an equally important intellectual role, that have complemented each other to lead the Kingdom to safety during a highly sensitive phase in the region’s history.

Despite attempts by some adversaries to reproduce a discourse linking Saudi Arabia to terrorism and extremism, the facts on the ground tell a different story. The Saudi experience in combating terrorism provides an example of how countries can turn crises into opportunities, and that when security decisiveness is coupled with intellectual and social reform, it can create a real and sustainable transformation.
